Announcements

31 May: This week is a busy one! Let's finish out the year right! Today and tomorrow are your last days of class. ALL work needs to be turned in before exams. Your first period exam is Thursday at 810a. Your English EOC is Friday at 810a. A couple of tips to remember...
  • Wear layers of clothing, I have no control over the temperature of the room.
  • Bring #2 pencils, an eraser and a highlighter for the test.
  • Take your time- you have 4 hours to finish, take advantage of it!
  • Read each question and each answer choice carefully. The test makers love to put an answer that sort of sounds right as an early answer choice when the REAL answer is further down.
  • Read passages out loud to yourself (but not really- you know what I mean :-) so you can make the right correction.
  • Good luck- you guys can do this!

16 May: This week we finish our unit on Lord of the Flies. As the novel ends, there are some pretty horrific events that occur. As you read, try and think if this could really happen. Are children that cruel? Looking at the picture below (from one of the movie versions of the book) do these kids look like murderers? How responsible do you think the boys are for what they do?

9 May: Don't forget- Community service is due this Friday!
This week we continue with Lord of the Flies. I think a lot of you who thought you'd like to be in the boys' situation have changed your mind by now! Do you think these events could happen in real life? Think of all the news stories about bullying, it's not as far fetched as you might think.

11 April: This week we continue Goal 5 but move onto short stories, which we'll read the next two weeks. Each story focuses on a different set of literary elements, so make sure that you learn your definitions! Below is a short video to help you with reviewing the literary terms.

4 April: I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend! This week we start our genre unit, which is our longest one. During this unit, we'll study epics, short stories and we'll read Lord of the Flies as our class novel.
This week we cover epics by reading The Odyssey. It's one of the first adventure stories ever written and covers Odysseus as he tried to get home after the Trojan War.

The interactive notebooks are 25% of your grade and should be an easy 100 every time that you turn it in. Please see me during Intervention during the week if you feel like you need help.

Welcome to Ms. Shimmy's Freshman English Class. On this page, you will find announcements for class, reminders of due dates and other information I think is important for you to know. Be sure to check back frequently.
For class this week, the first things you'll need are your materials: a 5 subject spiral notebook (preferably with pockets). I also suggest, although it's not required, that you have a highlighter and a set of colored markers, they will make it easier for you to keep up with your interactive notebook.
